Mistras was an important fortified Byzantine city, and people come from all over the world to see its ancient ruins and artifacts. However, in the midst of this grandeur, I found that my eye was drawn by the the small things, doorways, courtyards, glimpses of ordinary life transfigured by the magical light. As we walked up to the city the way was strewn with fresh ripe figs.
